Melamine, also known as melamine resin or protein essence, has the chemical formula C₃H₆N₆. Its IUPAC name is "1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triamine". It is a triazine-type nitrogen-containing heterocyclic organic compound and is mainly used as a chemical raw material. It is a white monoclinic crystal with almost no odor, insoluble in water, and harmful to the body. It is strictly prohibited for use in food processing or as a food additive. On October 27, 2017, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of the World Health Organization classified melamine as a 2B carcinogen, which means "possibly carcinogenic to humans".
