Insulated glass, also known as double-glazed glass or insulated glass units (IGUs), is a specialized energy-saving glass product designed to enhance thermal insulation, soundproofing, and overall comfort in residential, commercial, and institutional buildings. Unlike single-pane glass, which offers minimal resistance to heat transfer, insulated glass is constructed by hermetically sealing two or more panes of float glass, tempered glass, or heat-strengthened glass with a spacer system. The spacer—typically made of aluminum, stainless steel, or thermally broken materials filled with desiccant (to absorb moisture)—creates a sealed air gap (or cavity) between the panes, which is often filled with inert gases like argon, krypton, or xenon to further improve thermal performance. This layered structure acts as a barrier to heat flow: the sealed cavity reduces conductive and convective heat transfer, while the multiple glass panes minimize radiant heat loss or gain. Insulated glass complies w…
